Frequently Asked Questions
The Sauna
The Patented Curved Design:
- Minimizes wasted space for faster heat-up times
- Promotes natural heat circulation from top to bottom with the help of a 4-vent ventilation system, creating even heat, enveloping steam, and clean airflow throughout
- Positions the top bench at the hottest point in the sauna
- Provides an aerodynamic profile safe for highway travel
Oh, and it's beautiful, too.
The number one reason is that we wanted a sauna that felt less claustrophic with more connection to nature. This solution provides 360° views of sky, water, woods, and stars at all hours, but also has the following benefits:
- Less thermal mass than wood means significantly faster heat-up
- Solar lift: direct sunlight can raise interior temperatures up to 75°F above ambient before the heater is even on
- A seamless vapor barrier that retains heat and steam, unlike wood shells with hundreds of joints that expand, contract, and leak over time
The panels are translucent rather than window-clear: from outside you read light and silhouettes, not detail, especially at night. Most owners site their sauna for the view out rather than the view in.
The heat and sauna experience in a NorthUp is truly unique and unmatched.

Our saunas are battle tested in the depths of Minnesota winters and can get to 200°F in as little as 30 minutes.
Another fun bonus: In direct sunlight, we've seen temperatures inside the sauna 75°F higher than the ambient outside temperature before even lighting the stove.

Short answer - yes it is safe.
A Certified Industrial Hygienist tested our sauna at 246°F, measuring 74 VOCs against the strictest safety standards in the industry. Every VOC was negligible or non-detectable. Read the full report here.
Additional bonus - the material is shatterproof and virtually unbreakable. We once had a tree fall on a client's sauna and it didn't break!
We absolutely offer both!
If buying an electric stove, you will need a licensed electrician to install a 200v/15A breaker to plug in the stove.

Delivery / Shipping
We can easily and affordably ship our flagship NorthUp Core model to anywhere in the country. It is easy to assemble with 2 people in minutes instead of hours or days.
We can also deliver/ship our other sauna models fully assembled. Feel free to ask us for an shipping/delivery estimate! You are always welcome to arrange a pickup at our warehouse to avoid any delivery fees.
Please reach out to us for an estimate to deliver/ship your sauna. As expected, it's cheaper to ship our NorthUp Core sauna kit, than it is a fully assembled NorthUp Curve.
Pickup free of charge at our shop in St Louis Park. This requires either a drop-down trailer or rental of a forklift at our site for a fee.
Installation
- Core: 6‘ W x 6’ L x 7' H
- Curve: 6‘ W x 6’ 2" L x 7' 3" H (9' 1" w/ chimney)
- Curve XL: 6‘ W x 10’ 1" L x 7' 5" H (9' 4" w/ chimney)
- Curve XL Mobile: 6‘ W x 10’ 1" L x 7' 5" H (sauna alone). 7'4" x 14' 6" x 12' H (with trailer tongue and chimney)
A wood-fired sauna should be 10’ from all combustibles at or above chimney level. There are no requirements for our electric sauna.
Certain municipalities require setbacks from property lines, water, or other structures. Check your local building codes.
All NorthUp models are lightweight and do not require a permanent foundation.
Options include:
- Directly on grass. NorthUp Curve models come with a durable skid made out of treated lumber that can contact the ground.
- Patio pavers or gravel to prevent settling
- Decking
- Concrete foundation
We recommend choosing a spot that is level. Minor uneven ground can be easily solved with wooden blocks, cinder blocks, patio pavers, or gravel.
Maintenance / Longevity
Saunas could not be easier to maintain.
It really just takes 1-2 minutes after each session to keep your sauna like new. Hot temperatures are the enemy of moisture, mold, mildew, and bacteria. We like to leave our sauna hot for 15 – 30 minutes after we're done to give it a nice bake and dry everything out.
See our full breakdown of our routine and a comparison to hot tub maintenance here.
Our oldest units are now over 4 years old and have endured full Minnesota seasons.
So far, we haven’t seen any cloudiness or discoloration in the panels, the material itself is holding up really well in terms of clarity and structure. We've really just seen minor maintenance we are happy to walk you through like tightening a bolt or sanding a door that is sticking. These are common things you'd see in a structure that lives outdoors.
We offer a 1-year warranty to cover anything that shouldn't happen (craftsmanship or material defects early on), and the Harvia stoves come with a 2-year warranty.
